The Hot 27 is a list of the Hottest 27 songs.
Remarks by @BizPlej. Posted as a public playlist below. Not expecting there to be much disagreement about any of this.
(June 11th, 2021)
Black Shoe / The Moondoggies (2008) Lyric structure ripped right out of the Ramones playbook.
Goodbye, Barcelona / Pokey LaFarge (2015) “My heart is a bird that sings while you’re gone….la da di da da di da da di dum…”
Red Fish / Matthew Logan Vasquez (2017) “Gonna get my lawyer to handle it…hey, Dave!”
Angola Rodeo / Black Lips (2020) Song is not about a metaphorical rodeo, but a literal one. “Do my time” rhymes with “rope me some bovines.”
Lose This Skin / The Clash (1980) High degree of difficulty due to bagpipes and fiddle.
Pool Party / Rudy Willingham (2019) No verses, just a chorus, but they’re the only words you all need.
When It Was Wrong / The California Honeydrops (2010) “I liked it better [Name of Song].”
Something for your M.I.N.D. / Superorganism (2018) Sound effects include [INDOOR TROPICAL BIRDS] and [BUBBLES] and [정신에 집어넣으세요].
How Lucky / Kurt Vile, John Prine (2020) Yup, how lucky?
The Ballad of the Kingsmen / Todd Snider (2004) “Me think of me girl oh so constantly. Ah may-ah make-ah ah oooohhhh ahhhhhh.”
So What / Hidden Fees (2014) “There ain’t no love lost in the deep outer space.”
Whites of Their Eyes / Mattiel (2017) A striking similarity to Johnny Horton’s Battle of New Orleans.
She Turns My Radio On / Jim Ford (2016) Organ banging away on a hot summer night.
All American Alien Boy / Ian Hunter (1976) “Here I come…the land of ho ho hum.” Extra difficulty points awarded for saxophone usage and employment of a lengthy bass solo.
I’m Ready / Royal Trux (1998) “Now you know [Name of Song]. Can’t you see [Name of Song].”
Hello Take Me Anywhere / Night Shop (2020) “When the asteroid hits…” there won’t be much thought put into “…roaming the streets at night.”
Rising Sun / Erin Durant (2019) Long and slow, melodic and pretty. A “California bungalow” plays a significant role in the narrative.
Baby I Go For You / The Blue Rondos (1964) "I’ve had it…[Name of Song].”
Onion / Shannon & The Clams (2018) “I’m working on it. Holy shit. I ignore so many problems.”
Back it Up / Celeste Krishna & Monarchs (2020) The feeling of enjoying what’s in front of you while getting rid of all this stuff you don’t need.
He’s Fine / The Secret Sisters (2017) “Davey White. Where is he tonight? He’s sleeping with her in a Tennessee town and he’s fine.” How dare he!
Dear Mexico (Thank You for Joyce) / Twain (2017) Beautiful and flowing. Reminds me of a specifically awful older song, and if you can avoid figuring out which one, you’ll thoroughly enjoy this one. So don’t try to figure it out.
Strange Girl / Laura Marling (2020) “Stay low, keep brave. I love you my [Name of Song].”
7ft Tall Post-Suicidal Feel Good Blues / Nancy (2021) ”In this house, we believe in Bigfoot. He will be my boyfriend. We will fuck.” Is this a nostalgic song about love lost from a bigfoot point of view? While you’re here...is the plural bigfoots or bigfeet?
Vou Recomeçar / Gal Costa (1969) French.
Hard Out Here / Hayes Carll (2011) Best played loud with no apologies. “They say boy you ain’t a poet, just a drunk with a pen.”
Nashville Radio / Jon Langford (2004) “…I’ll be out in the back of my car. Cause I don’t know a soul I can trust with my money or tune up my guitar.” Is this a straight up biography of Hank Williams, or a fictionalized account?
***The Hot 27 owes its inspiration to my older brother, Matt. Years ago, my brother had an extensive collection of vinyl records. He bought a couple of music store record bins in a going out of business sale, and he organized his collection into them alphabetically, complete with cardboard tabs for each letter. Any album that had just been played was returned to the first column of the bin, and placed in front of a tab marked “The Hot 14”. It always held a minimum of 14 records. When it got too big for it's slot, some records were refiled, but the front 14 stayed there, some of them for months on end. My best guess is that the number of albums under that tab was normally closer to twenty-seven.
