The Hot 27 is a list of the Hottest 27 songs.

Remarks by @BizPlej. Posted as a public playlist below. Not expecting much disagreement about any of this.

(Sept 12, 2024)

  1. Punk Rock Loser / Viagra Boys (2022) “It sure ain’t glamorous, but I keep things loose”

  2. Tall Boy / Abby Webster (2017) Companionship in a tall can of beer

  3. Trans-Canada Oil Boom Blues / Whitney K (2023) The live version here is just a couple clicks better than the album version, imho

  4. Checkmate / The Bug Club (2021) “You can borrow my dad’s porn, from 1974”

  5. The Staunton Lick / Lemon Jelly (2000) One of those songs where the louder you play it the better it gets

  6. Amarillo Highway (for Dave Hickey) / Terry Allen (1978) According to a close friend and shipping logistics  tycoon - this song holds a great deal of scorn and disdain for country music culture. I think I get it

  7. Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness / Alabama 3 (1997) As happy as John Prine’s version is sad. Play Prine’s to cuddle up and be depressed, this one for enjoying some quality alone time

  8. Really Nice Guys / Ron Gallo (2018) You guys sure looked like you were having fun up there

  9. Tiers Monde / Francis Bebey (1975-1982) Uh oh - another instrumental. Some of you all might not be able to hang

  10. Baby / Merce Lemon (2020) It’s a break up song. Short and sweet, just like a break up should be when things go right

  11. Eulogy for You and Me / Tanya Davis (2010) “Things change time passes death happens”

  12. Suck the Blood from My Wound / Ezra Furman (2018) Straight to #1 on yer halloween playlists

  17. Glorious / Sudan Archives (2019) “Focus on the bottom line, what they call a dollar sign…so you never fall behind”

  18. Eggshells / Dehd (2022) “Walk along, walk along”

  23. Yellow Taxi / Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear (2015) This is not that yellow taxi song, which every sane sober person should join me in hating. That one sucks, this one is good

  24. Summer Windows / Slaughter Beach, Dog (2023)  “Use a hand” rhymes with “Townes Van Zandt”

  25. The Shell Song / The Stone Rollers (2024) Don’t suffer fools. Kick ‘em to the curb, move on

  26. back / Kirouac, Kodakludo (2018) “wicco kiccoo! Fresh fresh wow wow…call me back call me back now”

  27. Been Worryin’ / Jeremie Albino, Cat Clyde (2021) Worrying. Wondering. Sorrow and strife. Ain’t that the life

***The Hot 27 owes its inspiration to my older brother, Matt. Years ago, my brother had an extensive collection of vinyl records. He bought a couple of music store record bins in a going out of business sale, and he organized his collection into them alphabetically, complete with cardboard tabs for each letter. Any album that had just been played was returned to the first column of the bin, and placed in front of a tab marked “The Hot 14”. It always held a minimum of 14 records. When it got too big for it's slot, some records were refiled, but the front 14 stayed there, some of them for months on end. My best guess is that the number of albums under that tab was normally closer to twenty-seven.
