(November 22, 2019)
My Heart Hurts / Nick Lowe (1982) It’s a happy song. It’s a sad song. “Underneath my shirt, [Name of Song]”
London, Bye, Ta-Ta / David Bowie (1968) “Got to go fa - fa, [Name of Song]”
Beach House / The Cave Singers (2009) Something about being the youngest of 3. Barely mentions beach houses.
Fais pas ci, fais pas ça / Jacques Dutronc (1968) La la la ending c’est bon.
Et Moi, et moi, et moi / Jacques Dutronc (1966) C'est la vie!
I've Got a Hole Where My Heart Should Be / The Sheepdogs (2017) “...where my heart should be-ee-eeeeeee-yeah”
Sports / Viagra Boys (2018) Great song to get you pumped before league bowling night.
Shivers / The Cairo Gang (2013) Slow and pretty - “I-yie-yie-yie-yie...yie-yie-yie-yie-yie”
Blue Mountain / Bob Weir (2016) Nobody asked for this, but here it is anyway. “Blue mountain, you're aujourd'hui” and “I drink at the Blue Goose Saloon”
Instant Disassembly / Parquet Courts (2014) “[Name of song]” and “It's hard to in hell-yeah”
Run Wild / Twain, The Deslondes (2019) Solid advice, plus “I’m going to build a rocket ship, vi va va voom“
Judy Garland / Frog (2015) Sophisticated stuff like “Jesus couldn’t quell the pains of America and trucks and trains and tractor trailers on the range” and “Goldwyn Mayer, Fred Astaire, slicking back his oily hair” but the best is “Oh Ju-ewwwww-uewdeeee”
It's Time To Wake Up (2023) / La Femme (2013) “You're going to die. I'm telling the truth.” Might be something sinister going on, but too French for me to get a good reading on things.
Je ne suis pas tres drogue / The Limiñanas (2010) Another French one. “Woop! Woof! Woop! Woof!”
Psychic City - Radio Edit / YACHT (2010) “Aye-e-yah-e-yah-yaw.”
Have a Cuppa Tea / The Kinks (1971) “He loves his leg of beef” and “For Christ's sake, [Name of Song]”
El Beach / The Limiñanas (2016) Still more Frenchie stuff.
This is What I'm Doing / Dick Stusso (2015) “I know I know I know this is not what I should be doing..., but [Name of Song]”
Take My Side / Will Butler (2015) Hard to beat this: “I’d tell you why, but I’m having problems with my words. If I could fly, I’d beat the shit out of some birds”
Salvation / The Limiñanas (2012) What it should be: “I need protection / gun selection”
Sorry People / Savoy Motel (2016) “Bwom bwom bwom bwom bwom.”
Don’t Try And Tell Me / Thee Headcoatees (2008) “Gabba gabba hey…hey!” An inexhaustible library of songs, one that even Billy Childish’s agent doesn’t know about.
I Don't Know / The Sheepdogs (2011) “I get up in the morning, honey...[Name of Song]”
Crack of Dawn / Paul & The Tall Trees (2016) The hooks are almost too much. “Look at the clock, I’m up at the [Name of Song] looking for you…” and honestly want to help you out with: “I thought the last time, would be the last time”
Next Time / Paul & The Tall Trees (2016) “I don’t want to live my life angry…(Name of Song, ah-ah-ah) …so I’m just going to need some time”
Kindness be Conceived / Thao & The Get Down Stay Down (2013) “How we breathe, and why we die”
Watered-Down Love / Bob Dylan (1981) “You want [Name of Song]. Yes you do, you know you do.”
***The Hot 27 owes its inspiration to my older brother, Matt. Years ago, my brother had an extensive collection of vinyl records. He bought a couple of music store record bins in a going out of business sale, and he organized his collection into them alphabetically, complete with cardboard tabs for each letter. Any album that had just been played was returned to the first column of the bin, and placed in front of a tab marked “The Hot 14”. It always held a minimum of 14 records. When it got too big for it's slot, some records were refiled, but the front 14 stayed there, some of them for months on end. My best guess is that the number of albums under that tab was normally closer to twenty-seven.
